Woods To Visit & Explore Around St Ives Cornwall
If You Go Down In The Woods Today…
There is something really magical and mystical about exploring the woods.
Things We Love To Do On Our Visits To The Woods
1. Walking. We always plan a walk through the woods. We have young children, so we need to make sure they can manage it too.
2. Picnics. We always take a picnic, or at the very least a nice little snack.
3. Listening and Looking. We always have lots of breaks where we find a spot to sit, look and listen.
4. Drawing. My daughter and husband often bring their sketch pads.
5. Photographing. I bring my cameras.
6. Bird & Wildlife Spotting.
7. Plant spotting.
8. Collecting for art projects.
9. Rubbish collecting.
10. Can you spot…(similar to eye spy but with specific nature clues)
Our Favourite Woods In & Around St Ives
Steeple Woods, St Ives
Steeple Woods is walkable from St Ives. It is a 40 acre site around Knills Monument which is made up of woods, heathland and the monument. It has beautiful views across St Ives Bay.
Steeple Woodland Nature Reserve looks after the area and you can volunteer to help them once a week with maintenance. They also hold various events throughout the year to help promote and preserve the area.
To get to Steeple Woods, drive out of St Ives towards Carbis Bay. Turn right off St Ives Road up Steeple Lane by The Cornish Arms pub. Take the left hand fork in the road and drive up to the top. There are various laybys to park in, and it rarely gets busy.
Anne’s Wood, Lelant
Anne’s Wood is a small wood, tucked away between Lelant and the Hayle Estuary. It is very well used by locals. We visit here lots with my little boy as my daughter goes to her ballet classes in Lelant.
To get to Anne’s Wood, drive into Lelant and turn down Station Road by The Badger Inn. The wood is on the left hand side and along The Saltings. You can park on the road around here, there is usually plenty of parking. If not, there is parking at Lelant Railway Station.
Trevaylor Woods, Penzance
Trevaylor Woods in Penzance is one of the best woods!
To get to Trevaylor Woods, drive through Gulval and up Gear Hill. The woods are half way between Gulval and Newmill.
Marazion Marsh
Marazion Marsh isn’t primarily known for it’s wood, more it’s wetlands. However, there is a lovely wood here too with ash and willow. It is right next to Cornwall’s largest reedbed.
To get to Marazion Marsh wood, drive along the A394 towards Helston. The wood is on the left hand side.
Godolphin Woods
Godolphin Woods is part of the Godolphin Estate owned by The National Trust, but is free to visit without a National Trust pass. It is very popular with dog walkers and is very easy going with well maintained footpaths.
Tehidy Woods
Tehidy Woods is one of our most visited places. There are 2 main sections to it – the lake and the main woods.
To get the the main woods, drive up the coast road past Gwithian. Keep going over the tops and you will see North Cliffs car park on your right. It is free to park there.
Tanglewood
Tanglewood isn’t free to visit, but is well worth going on a beautiful Summers day.
Pendarves Wood
Pendarves Wood is a lovely wood owned by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
Pendarves Wood is off the B3303 near Camborne. There is free but limited parking.
