Stone Balancers Of St Ives Cornwall

The Gravity-Defying Stone Balancers Of St Ives

The Stone Balancers Of St Ives

Head past the loos by the RNLI station on Wharf Road and you will get to Lambeth Walk Beach. At low tide it is a dog walkers heaven, with a vast, sandy beach at your disposal (all year round!). At high tide it is just rocks. But rocks that people love to balance!

Stone balancing is a natural art which involves balancing stones on top of each other in unnatural forms, without the use of adhesives or wires. It takes quite a bit of patience and skill to do - you can't just plonk one on top of the other. You have to find the natural balancing point, which takes a lot of trial and error.

There is often a couple of people on Lambeth Walk Beach creating stone balancing art. Some of it simple, some of it really quite beautiful and complex!

Gavin Short used to be the main St Ives Stone Balancer who created wonderful stone art and raised a lot of money for the RNLI. I believe he has moved on to pastures, or stones new though. There are some new guys now who are great to watch!

You can often seen stone balancing further round between Bamaluz Beach and Porthgwidden Beach. There is a good stoney bit of coast just there which makes for good stone balancing. I've no idea who does this though, presumably just people having a go!
